People and the River

Introduction

The People and the River theme provides an overview of the history, water-related cultures, livelihoods and the relationship of people with the environment in the Orange-Senqu River basin. The material has been structured into the following chapters:

  • History and water-related culture – provides an overview of the history of the people in the four basin states and their cultures – with a special focus on water. General concepts of indigenous traditional knowledge are discussed. Traditional stories provide authentic impressions of the cultures in the basin and their relationship to water.
  • Socio-economics in the Basin – provides an overview of relevant human development issues and indicators as well as socio-economic portraits of the four basin states.
The San of the Kalahari are one of the indigenous groups of the Orange-Senqu River basin.
