IWRM takes place at scales ranging from international, to regional, basin-level, national and local. This chapter describes the regional level organisations and instruments responsible for promoting water governance that impact the Orange-Senqu River basin.
Regionally, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is guided by a number of instruments of the water sector. The Revised Protocol on Shared Watercourses provides the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management. The SADC Water Division is the institution responsible for implementing these principles through the SADC Policy and Strategy and the Strategic Action Plans. Member of the Orange-Senqu basin are also impacted by Bilateral agreements within the water sector.
